From the United Methodist Church monthly Men's Ministry newsletter (quoted from a note on Scouts-L in June 2008)

"It is with great excitement that we announce two new awards to recognize adult scouters and UM churches.

The Silver Torch Award was created for persons who have rendered valuable service through scouting ministries at the jurisdictional and general church and central conference levels. It goes beyond the existing Torch Award given for service at the annual conference level. Unlike any other UM adult recognition, there is no tenure requirement. It is expected that nominees have an exemplary record of service through scouting ministries and/or UM youth. An attractive medallion and accompanying certificate is bestowed upon honorees. Cost is $75. A three-member committee reviews applications periodically.

The Shepherd Church Charter Recognition was developed to recognize UM churches for sponsoring scouting groups (Boy Scout troops, Chub Scout packs, Venture crews, Girl Scout troops, Camp Fire and 4-H clubs and mentoring ministries like Big Brothers Big Sisters).Qualifying criteria, in addition to sponsorship, includes offering the God and Country series to youth and related items. Cost is $40 for the initial charter (recognition certificate) and annual renewal. Pastors of recipient churches will receive a subscription to Scouting News and notices about training opportunities among other benefits. UM menís groups are encouraged to cover the first yearís charter fee as an appropriate option in celebrating 100 years of menís ministry. One charter covers one or more church groups.

Additional information will soon be available on http://www.umscouting.org, the new scouting-ministry web site."
