RECENT SCOUT FICTION OF NOTE

Herby's Secret Forumula by Sue Hughey involves a boy who must survive based on his own ingenuity and the skills he learned as a Boy Scout according to the back cover of the book.

FICTION FROM THE EARLY YEARS OF SCOUTING

Notes:

Several dozens of books were published in the first three decades of Scouting with fictional stories about Scouts. Many authors and publishing houses wanted to cash in on Scouting's craze in those early years. James West fought to keep control of the Scouting name. Nonetheless dozens of these books were published, often with pseudonyms to protect the identity of the author. For example, St. George Rathbone was published under the names; Alan Douglas, Herbert Carter, Archibald Fletcher, E. Sherwood, and George A. Warren. The books sold because they were an inexpensive source of reading material, adventure and entertainment. Many also contributed to ethical character development and knowledge of Scoutcraft skills. The most successful author was Percy Keese Fitzhugh who wrote over 70 books with a Scouting theme and the official approval and sanction of BSA. His characters included Tom Slade, Pee Wee Harris, Westy Martin, and Roy Blakeley.

If anyone has a comprehensive bibliography of these books, I'd be happy to publish it here. Some of those books included the following:

English, James W.; The Tailbone Patrol

English, James W.; Tops in Troop Ten (1966)

Both stories written by James W. English for Boy's Life magazine are tales of Troop 10, which was sponsored by the 1st Congregational Church in Phoenix. Set in the 50's and 60's, they are really about the Phoenix--and Scouting--of the 30's. They even include adventures with Wipala Wiki, the Hopi Scout Ranger our OA lodge is named after. They are a great set of stories about how patrols worked "in the old days", and could inspire some to get off their tailbones and do stuff as a patrol, rather than waiting for the troop to come up with it. Brief synopsis: Family goes camping while parents participate in research in a wilderness area in the south west part of the country. The parents leave due to a family emergency. (The Ranger notes later that he wouldn't have allowed it if he'd realized the boys were left on their own.) The boys, 12 & 14 I believe, sometimes didn't get along very well, and the older, believing he can handle things better, decides to go to a place the younger brother is afraid to go to, as it is past a very narrow ledge area. How to handle things when the older brother doesn't return is a main part of the story. Facing fears, and making hard decisions is a main theme. Scouting comes into the story mostly in that the boys discuss working on merit badge requirements, and frequent references to things they'd learned in Scouting, especially when First Aid becomes important later in the story, as well as how to make decisions. HARDY BOYS DETECTIVE STORIES

I am pretty sure that the Hardy Boys were Scouts, I remember in one of the books they solved one of the cases by using Morse Code that they had learned in Scouts. (Source: Olan Watkins)

ROBERT A. HEINLEIN BOOKS

Robert A. Heinlein wrote a number of stories that involved Scouts.

One that I can lay my hands on immediatly is in Requiem (ISBN: 0-812-51391-6) and is titled "A Tenderfoot in Space". The editor's notes comment:

"... On looking over the list of stories, I found that 'A Tenderfoot in Space' had never been printed in anything except when in originally appeared in Boy's Life...." -- Virginia Heinlein

"This was written a year before Sputnik and is laid on the Venus earthbound astronomers inferred before space probes. Two hours of rewriting -- a word here, a word there -- could change it to a planet around some other star. But to what purpose? ... If I ever publish a collection of Boy Scout stories, this story will appear unchanged...." --RAH

I know that there are other Heinlein stories that mention Scouts (Farmer in the Sky comes to mind). An inquiry on alt.fan.heinlein would produce a plethora of other examples. (Source: Peter Sanders)

TOM SWIFT

I recall in the late 1960s there was a series of books about "Tom Swift." He and his Scout buddies had numberous adventures. On at least one of the covers I recall Tom and friend in full Scout uniform, complete w/ red beret hat which came into the uniform in the early 70s. (Source: Karl Poppelreiter)

BOY SCOUT EVERY BOY LIBRARY BOOKS

Franklin Mathiews was named as the Chief Scout Librarian in 1913 and formed a library commission consistng of librarians from around the country and the BSA editorial board to develop what became known as The Every Boy's Library. The commission selected titles to be published with a commission seal on the spine and cover in an effort to promote reading and literacy. Over 70 titles were published as part of the Every Boy's Library with the last ones being published in the early 1950s. Some of the authors included Fitzhugh, Baden-Powell, Seaton, Beard, London, Doubleday, and Quirk.

Doubleday, Russell; Cattle Ranch to College, Grosset & Dunlap - BSA Library (1913)
London, Jack; The Cruise of the Dazzler, Grosset & Dunlap - BSA Library (1913)
Quirk, Leslie W.; Baby Elton Quarterback, Grosset & Dunlap - BSA Library (1913)
