The information below was effective through May 31, 2015, when the Cub Scout advancement program was completely revised.

As part of the program changes, the Cub Scout Academics program, including all of the Belt Loops and Pins shown here, was discontinued as of June 1, 2015.

The Academics Program is an optional program for all Cub Scouts. It is not part of the normal requirements towards ranks. Its purpose is to assist the Scouts in learning a new skill, or improving one they already posses. Many of the Academic belt loops can be used by Webelos Scouts when working on various Activity Badges.

Loops and pins can be are earned by Tiger Cubs, Wolf and Bear Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts.

Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts may complete requirements in a family, den, pack, school, or community environment.

Tiger Cubs must work with their parents or adult partners.

Parents and partners do not earn loops or pins.

Complete details on using the academics program are contained in the
Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program Guide (#34299).

Recognitions can be earned for the following 25 academic areas:

Art, Astronomy, Chess, Citizenship, Collecting, Communicating, Computers, Disabilities Awareness, Family Travel, Geography, Geology, Good Manners, Heritages, Language and Culture, Map and Compass, Mathematics, Music, Nutrition, Pet Care, Photography, Reading and Writing, Science, Video Games, Weather, and Wildlife Conservation

The awards for Astronomy, Collecting, Language and Culture, Geology, and Map and Compass, were added in September, 2002.

The awards for Disabilities Awareness, Family Travel, Good Manners, Nutrition, Pet Care, Photography, Reading and Writing, and Video Games were added in November, 2009, and most of the other subjects had revisions to the requirements.

Academics belt loops are earned by the Cub by meeting the requirements listed.

Academics Pins

The Cub Scout Academics Pins are worn on civilian clothes only. The pins are triangular in shape. The designs for the various pins are shown on the belt loops for each subject.

Academics pins are given in each subject for Cub Scouts to recognize academic development

The Academics Pin for a specific subject may be earned once within each rank.

Academics pins are earned by meeting the appropriate requirements.
