Baraboo Circus
Baraboo, Wisconsin

Dear Scouts and Scout Leaders

Bring your attention to May 15, 16, & 17, 1998, under the Big Top, it's Baraboo Circus Heritage! Youth from all over the Midwest will converge at the Sauk County Fairgrounds in Baraboo, Wisconsin for the 12th annual celebration of circus fun and history. Baraboo Circus Heritage has many activities, But the main attraction is admission to the "Greatest Museum on Earth," the Circus World Museum.

Owned by the Historical Society of Wisconsin, the Circus World Museum has the best collection of circus memorabilia ever assembled. Enjoy a myriad of circus experiences, including circus performances under the big top tent, train loading shows, elephant rides, and a tour of the world's largest collection of antique circus wagons. The big top show features many acts including Happy the Clown, and Mr. Bill the Clown, longtime Baraboo Circus Heritage favorites.

Besides visiting the Circus World Museum, the following activities will take place at the Sauk County Fairgrounds. Additions and changes may occur.

CIRCUS SPIRIT NIGHT - Here's an opportunity for everybody that comes on Friday night to have some fun after they set up camp. Try your luck at the carnival games that will be set up in the picnic shelter near the Grandstand. Have your troop start a game of volleyball or ultimate Frisbee.

SCOUTING MUSEUM - Discover the history of the Scouting movement from Brownsea Island in 1907 to today's Baraboo Circus Heritage. See Scouting's past through patches, books, and historical items. And of course, figure out the answers to the Scouting Museum Contest. Make Lord Robert Baden-Powell proud!

THE CIRCUS HERITAGE TRAIL - The Trail will lead and challenge you through Baraboo, past many historic sites. You will be seeking answers to the Heritage Trail Contest questions. Put on your hiking shoes!

SKILLS COMPETITION - Come one! Come All! Join us for fun, games, and some friendly competition at the Roustabout Roundup! Compete with other groups for points in Circus games of skill and teamwork. The Top Three scoring groups will receive awards at the Center Ring Stage Show on Saturday night. The Roustabout Roundup is organized and run by the Tichora Lodge #146, Order of the Arrow.

GREAT MIDWESTERN PINEWOOD DERBY - Join in the fun. Races will be held on Saturday afternoon for boys and girls ages 7 thru 10 with an additional open class for ages 11 and up, including adults.

THE SIDESHOW - There are always many exciting displays and activities at the Sideshow. Scheduled activities at the Sideshow include Beadwork, Blacksmithing, Leatherwork, Fishing, Pioneering, Model Airplanes, Exploring, the U.S. Amateur Tug of War Association, Silkscreening, and Camp Castle Rock's Climbing Wall.

LEADER BAKE OFF - The tradition of culinary excellence will continue with another Leader Dutch Oven Dessert Bake Off. Bring your dutch oven and all the ingredients for your favorite dessert. Each unit may send one adult leader to participate. The Heritage will provide a recognition for each baker as well as first, second and third place awards.

MINIATURE CIRCUS WAGON CONTEST - Once again bring your own Circus Wagon made on a coaster wagon or similar chassis! The wagons must be built ahead of time, which would make a great project for a Den or Troop meeting. This is Baraboo Circus Heritage's unique competition!

CENTER RING STAGE SHOW - On Saturday night you will be treated to a special stage show at the Fairgrounds Grandstand. There will be professional entertainment and of course the much anticipated announcement of the Award Winners. There will be many surprises and an amazing finishing ceremony!!

Jamboree style camping space will be provided for the first two thousand campers on grass covered sites at the fairgrounds. The camping space is available Friday and/or Saturday night at no extra charge. Some units choose to come just for the day on Saturday and not camp overnight.
