Several years ago BSA was concerned that certain rural and inner-city urban areas were not being reached by the Scouting program. As part of its push to offer the Scouting program, the Whitney Young, Jr. Award was developed to recognize outstanding support and service at both the local and national level in reaching under-served areas. The knot may only be worn by holders of individual awards.

Candidates for this award must be nominated. Self-nomination disqualifies the candidate.


Recognitions:

Recipients of this award now receive either of the knots shown above.  Once supplies of the Whitney Young Award knot, which has been discontinued, are exhausted, all recipients will receive the Scouting Service Award Square knot shown above.

In addition to the Square knot patch shown above, recipients receive a medal, shown below.
