BOY SCOUT
ADVANCEMENT
REQUIREMENT CHANGES

Effective: January 1, 1998

ussspdiv.gif (1704 bytes)

A number of changes were made to the requirements for ranks and various merit badges in the 1998 edition of Boy Scout Requirements. The changes are effective immediately, except for Scouts who have already started a merit badge. They may continue to use the old requirements.

In addition to the Merit Badges listed on the inside front cover of the Requirements Book, some unannounced changes were made to some other Merit Badges this year, and in the past two editions.  In the analyses referenced by this page, we have included  and identified these previously unannounced changes.

We have also identified some other errors made by the editors of the 1998 Boy Scout Requirements Book which have been acknowledged by the Boy Scout Division of BSA, and have included some clarifications the Boy Scout Division has made.

When there is a conflict between two published lists of requirements, such as the Requirements Book and a Merit Badge Pamphlet, even when the pamphlet has a later issue date, the Requirements Book should be considered to be the controlling document, until a newer edition of the Requirements Book is issued.

Note:  The Merit Badge Library listing on the inside back cover of the 1998 Requirements Book, does not include Archaeology (1996) nor Climbing (1996), and has the wrong date for Personal Management (should be 1996).
