Comments for Grout Pond Recreation Area
    Green Mountain National Forest

First come, first serve, no charge. No group camping; maximum of two vehicles and tents per site. Some sites near the ranger cabin, another 6 to 8 sights accessible by canoe (you bring your own). One modern latrine near the beach/canoe put-in; may be others, but didn't check. Swimming is permitted, but no lifeguard (Safe Swim rules for Scouts). Canoe campsites are designated by number and include platforms on which you MUST place your tent(s); sites have fire rings, but downed wood is scarce. Several short trails in the immediate vicinity which generally loop the pond, plus a connection to a trail that leads down to the north end of Somerset Resevoir--worth the hike (45 minutes from campsite 12, probably 1-1/4 hrs from the base camp). Only a couple of miles from the Appalachian Trail/Long Trail.

The site of Stratton Mountain Scout Reservation, from 1950-1979. First owned by Fort Orange Council, Albany, NY, then Fort Orange - Uncle Sam and finally, Governor Clinton Council. Few of the buildings survive today. Traces of the old sites exist and the trail structure remains intact. A clean lake to swim in and fun to canoe at. Located near the Long Trail and a short hike to Somerset Reservoir. I attended summer camp there in 1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976 & 1977. I'm open to questions about the camp.

On staff at SMSR in 1956, 1960, 61 and 62. My father was the architect that designed SMSR. Would love to hear from alumni.
