rec.scouting FAQ's
Rec.scouting has a wider audience than any mailing list (current estimates are around 20,000 readers worldwide) but the negative side of this is that it has a higher amount of 'noise' (i.e. contributions with little or no useful content) than in a mailing list. To cope with this fact, the most useful contributions are collected by a group of editors and compiled in a group of FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions files) which is archived on a number of sites and posted on rec.scouting every month. Other items that did not make it into a FAQ file (because of their kind or size) are stored on the different FTP archives.
One of the places where you can pick up the FAQ files is on the scouting archives at ftp.ethz.ch/rec.scouting/faq:
- rec.scouting FAQ #0: Welcome to rec.scouting - General questions
- rec.scouting FAQ #1: Skits Yells And Campfires
- rec.scouting FAQ #2: Scouting around the World
- rec.scouting FAQ #3 Games
- rec.scouting FAQ #4: Unit Administration
- rec.scouting FAQ #5: Silk Screen Techniques
- rec.scouting FAQ #6: Cub Scout Leader Hints
- rec.scouting FAQ #7: Fund Raising Ideas
- rec.scouting FAQ #8: BSA/GSUSA official policies (gays in scouting)
- rec.scouting FAQ #9: Scouting on the World Wide Web
The easiest way to obtain these FAQs is to use a WWW Browser, such as Netscape, Mosaic or something similar, to access them at the URL http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/hypertext/faq/usenet/scouting/top.html . Access the FAQs via Gopher at, gopher://gopher.ethz.ch:1070/11/rec.scouting .

Subject: Final Draft - RFD for rec.scouting.world, rec.scouting.misc
Here it is, gang. The final draft. All I need now is your "GO"/"NO GO"
(if "NO GO", let me know what to change), and it goes... Yee.ha!
Yours in Scouting,
Lou
--- START OF FINAL DRAFT RFD ---
REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group rec.scouting.world
unmoderated group rec.scouting.misc
This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the change in scope
of the Miscellaneous Scouting group in the rec.scouting.* hierarchy and
the establishment of a new group for World (International) Scouting
in the rec.scouting.* hierarchy. This is not a Call for Votes (CFV);
you cannot vote at this time. Procedural details are below:
Newsgroup lines:
rec.scouting.world World-wide/international Scouting.
rec.scouting.misc Miscellaneous Scouting Information & Topics.
RATIONALE: all groups
The original charter for rec.scouting.misc has been extended to serve
more than simply posts of an international flavor. The group name does
not reflect the intent of the charter and causes confusion, especially
among newcomers who accidentally or improperly post to the group unaware
of its international intent. By establishing a new group
(rec.scouting.world) that clearly shows its world-wide/international
intent, and revising the charter for rec.scouting.misc, confusion may
be reduced. I cite the "Guidelines on Usenet Newsgroup Names" (Helping
Users section) as further evidence that the current structure and
charter of the newsgroup is inadequate. This reference may be found in
(news.announce.newgroups) or:
ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/news.groups/Guidelines_on_Usenet_Newsgroup_Names
CHARTER: rec.scouting.world

interest in an international forum. It allows for the solicitation
of advice from other Scouts, Scouters & Guides from around the world
on various situations and generally seeks to provide support and
encouragement with respect to international Scouting. Examples of
international dicussions include jamborees and encampments,
where-to-go camping, comparison of aims and methods used to grow
Scouts, Scouters & Guides, camping and hiking tips, ceremonies of
an international nature and training programs common to all members
of the World Association of Girls and Guides (WAGGS) and World
Association of Scouting Movements (WOSM).

attempt to vote until this happens.
All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups and
