Greetings,
I am a Troop Scouter in Alberta Canada, and am currently working on setting up a talker specifically
geared towards Scouting and Guiding. I intend for this talker to be available to Scouts, Guides, and
adult volunteers of all ages, and fully intend for it to be one of the few "safe" places for young people to chat on the Internet. Since the talker will be Scout/Guide-based, full adherance to the Scout Law and Guide Law will be expected of all who use the talker, and those who do not abide by the rules will be ejected from the talker.
For those of you not familiar with the Internet term "talker," here is a brief explanation. A talker is a program on the Internet that people log into using telnet, and chat with other people. It is somewhat similar to IRC, except that it is much more robust and easier (in my opinion) to use, since you don't have to have an IRC client to use it. Most computers nowadays have a telnet program already installed, and for those who don't, telnet programs are easily found, and are much nicer to use than most IRC programs. Additionally, a talker gives you the capability of making sure someone else doesn't use your favorite nickname, because it allows you to set a password on that nickname so that only you can use it!
When the talker is up and running, I will send full instructions on how to reach the talker, and how to use it, for all who are interested. If you are interested in hearing more about this project, please join the Scout-Talk mailing list by sending mail to
