Rank Requirements

Revisions to these requirements,
which became effective on January 1, 1998,

These requirements were the ones in effect until April 1, 1999, (December 31, 1999, for Explorers) but have been superceded.

After April 1, 1999, all Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers, and Sea Scouts must use the 1999 Requirements. 

Explorers (Participants in the Learning for Life Exploring program) could continue to use the requirements below until December 31, 1999.

1. Be active in your troop and patrol for at least 4 months as a First Class Scout. 
2. Demonstrate scout spirit by living the Scout Oath (Promise) and Scout Law in your everyday life. 
3. Earn six merit badges, including four from the required list for Eagle. (The required list for Eagle has 15 merit badges in 12 categories. Any of the 15 may be used for this requirement.) 
4. While a First Class Scout, take part in service projects totaling at least 6 hours of work. These projects must be approved by your Scoutmaster. 
5. While a First Class Scout, serve actively 4 months in one or more of the following troop positions of responsibility (or carry out a Scoutmaster-assigned leadership project to help the troop): 

• patrol leader, 
• senior patrol leader, 
• assistant senior patrol leader, 
• den chief, 
• scribe, 
• librarian, 
• historian, 
• quartermaster, 
• bugler, 
• chaplain aide, 
• instructor, 
• junior assistant scoutmaster, 
• troop guide, 
• Venture crew chief, or 
• Varsity team captain. 

6. Take part in a Scoutmaster conference 
7. Complete your board of review.

(NOTE: The note in parentheses at the end of Requirement 3 means that, for example, a boy can use both Lifesaving AND Emergency Preparedness and/or Sports, Swimming AND Personal Fitness toward the requirement of 3 more (7 total) from the required list for Eagle when working toward Life Scout.) 

Please note that Requirement 7 - (Complete your Board of Review) MAY be done AFTER the candidate has reached age 18.  All other requirements must be completed BEFORE the candidate's 18th Birthday.

The requirements above were written those for boys enrolled in the Boy Scout Division as members of Boy Scout Troops (including Venture Patrols within Troops) or Varsity Scout Teams. Below are the guidelines which apply to participants in Explorer Posts.

• Any male Explorer (a participant in the Exploring program of Learning for Life) who has achieved the First Class rank as a Boy Scout in a troop or Varsity Scout in a team may continue advancement toward Star, Life and Eagle Scout ranks up to his 18th birthday, or until December 31, 1999, whichever comes first.
• He must meet the requirements as prescribed in the official Boy Scout Handbook and the current Boy Scout Requirements book.
• The Explorer may fulfill leadership requirements by serving as president, vice president, secretary, or treasurer of his post.
• The Scoutmaster conference will be conducted by the Advisor.
• A board of review will be conducted by the post committee.

After 1999, Explorers (participants in the Exploring program of Learning for Life)  will be ineligible for Boy Scout advancement unless they are also registered as members of a Boy Scout Troop, a Varsity Scout Team, a Venturing Crew, or a Sea Scout Ship.
