Requirements Changes
The following Requirements were revised in the
1998 edition of the Webelos Scout Book.
(New wording is shown in bold underlined
type.
Deletions are shown struck through in
red italics, like this text.
Changes made since the
1998 edition was printed are shown in Bold Green Underlined text, like
this sentence.
There are minor wording changes to most of the items.
A new item 7 was added as follows:
Put on a personal Flotation device (PFD) that
is the right size for you. Make sure it is properly fastened. Wearing
the PFD, jump into water over your head. Show how the PFD keeps your
head above water by swimming 25 feet. Get out of the water, remove
the PFD, and hang it where it will dry.
Old item 7 was renumbered as number 8.
There are minor wording changes to items 2, 3, and 6, and
the requirement for bent-knee sit-ups in item 3 was changed to
curl-ups.
Instead of requiring the first two items, and three of the
other four items, the requirement is now to do six of the items.
Item 1 has minor wording changes.
Old items 2 and 5 were deleted, items 3, 4, and 6 were
renumbered to 4, 6, and 5.
New items 2, 3, and 7 were added as follows:
2. Read the meal planning information in this
chapter. With a parent or other family member, plan a week of meals.
Explain what kinds of meals are best for you and why.
3. Keep a record of your daily meals and snacks for a
week. Decide whether you have been eating foods that are good for
you.

Discuss it with an adult and show that you understand the material.
NOTE: The booklet "Don't Be
Tricked by Drugs: A Deadly Game!" mentioned in Requirement 7 in the
book has been replaced by a newer booklet, entitled "Take
A Stand Against Drugs!". The booklet should be available from
your local Boy Scout Council Office (NOT the Scout Shop™). If your Council
Office does not have copies of this publication, they should call the
National BSA Drug Prevention Task Force for additional copies. Bulk
orders by Scouters or other groups are also accepted, and may be made by
sending a check for $20.00 for 100 copies, to:

There are minor wording changes to items 1, 2, and 4.
Items 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 had minor wording changes.
Item 3 was changed to require use of a computer:
Item 7 was replaced with the following:
- Make an art construction, using your choice of
materials.
- Create a collage that expresses something about
yourself.
Items 4, 5, and 7 had minor wording changes.
In the PUPPETRY option,
each of the items had minor wording changes.
In the MUSIC option,
items 3, 5, and 7 had minor wording changes.
In the DRAMA option,
items 1, 7, and 8 had minor wording changes.
Items 1, 2, 5, and 7 had minor wording changes.
Old item 3 was deleted, and replaced with old item 4, which had some
minor wording changes.
New item 4 was added as follows:
- Figure out what it costs per mile for the trip you have
taken in requirement 3.
Items 3, 4, 5, and 6 had minor wording changes.
Item 16 was moved to the required section as item 7, and changed to
read as follows:
- Alone or with your Webelos den, do a special Good Turn.
Help your church or other religious organization, school,
neighborhood, or town. Tell what you did.
Items 7-15 were renumbered as 8-16, with minor wording changes to items
8, 12, 15, and 16.
Instead of requiring 4 of the first 7 items, and 2 of the other 4
items, the requirement is now to do 7 out of the 14 items.
Item 2 now reads:
- Prepare and give a three-minute talk to your den on a
subject of your choice.
Item 3 had a minor wording change and Item 4 now reads as follows:
- Identify and discuss with your den as many different
methods of communication as you can (at least six different methods).
Old items 5 and 7 were deleted; items 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 were
renumbered to 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 14; minor wording changes were made to
new item 6; and item 10 was changed to read as follows:
- Use a personal computer to write a letter to a friend
or relative. Create your letter, check it for grammar and spelling,
and save it to either a hard drive or a diskette. Print it.
New items 8, 11, 12, and 13 were added, and read as follows:
- Write an article about a den activity for your pack
newsletter or local newspaper.
- Under the supervision of a parent or adult, search the
Internet and connect to five Web sites that interest you. Exchange
e-mail with a friend or relative.
- Earn the academics belt loop for Computers.
- Earn the academics belt loop for Communicating.
Items 2 and 3 had minor wording changes.
The numbering of items 4 and 5 was reversed.
New Item 6 was added as follows:
- Plan your own budget for 30 days. Keep track of your
daily expenses for seven days.
Items 6-11 were renumbered 7-12, and items 7 and 11 (old 6 and 10) had
minor wording changes.
Item 12 (old 11) was revised to read as follows:
- Take part in at least four family meetings and help
make decisions. The meetings might involve plans for family
activities, or they might be about serious topics that your parent
wants you to know about.
Items 1, 3, and 11 had minor wording changes.
Item 2 was changed to read as follows:
- Explain how you can get help quickly if there is an
emergency in your home. Make a "help list" of
people or agencies that can help you if you need it. Post it near a
phone or other place with easy access.
The requirement to do items 1-3 and 1 of the other 5 items was removed.
The Webelos Scout must do all 4 items which remain.
Item 3 was renumbered as item 1, with a minor wording change.
Although the list of projects is unchanged, the instructions for item 2
were changed to read as follows:
- With adult supervision and using hand tools, construct
two different wooden objects you and your Webelos den leader agree on,

least two of these projects. Put them together
with glue, nails, or screws. Paint,
and paint or stain them.
Or do any similar projects that you and your Webelos den
leader agree upon.

renumbered as 3 and 4, and changed to read as follows:

changes. New item 6 was changed to read:
- Make drawings of three kinds of bridges and explain
their differences.

model bridge of your choice.
Items 1, 3, 4, 5, and 9 had minor wording changes, including the
addition of a requirement for adult supervision in items 3, 4, and 9.
Item was changed to read as follows:
- Help take care of the lawn.
Items 2, 3, and 6 were changed to read as follows:
- Read Pascal's Law. Tell about some inventions that use
Pascal's law.
Show how
it works.
- Read Newton's first law of motion. Show in
three different ways how inertia works.
- Show the effects of water
and
air pressure. This may be combined
with atmospheric pressure or with air pressure.
New item 7 was added, and reads as follows:
- Build and launch a model rocket with adult supervision.
(NOTE: You must be at least 10 years old to work with a model rocket
kit sold in hobby stores.)
Item 12 was removed, items 7-11 were renumbered 8-12 and new item 10
was changed to read as follows:

Explain how you use your center of gravity to keep your

Item 1 was replaced with the following
- Make a map of the United States. Show the types of
forests growing in different parts of the country. Name some kinds of
trees that grow in these forests. For each type of forest, give one or
more examples of uses for the wood of its trees.
New items 2, 3, 5, and 10 were added, as follows:
- Draw a picture to show the plant and tree layers of a
forest in your area. Label the different layers. (If you don't live in
an area that has forests, choose an area that does and draw a
picture of that forest.)
- Identify six forest trees common to the area where you
live. Tell how both wildlife and humans use them. (If you don't live
in a region that has forests, read about one type of forest and
name six of its trees and their uses.)
- Draw a picture showing
- how water and minerals in the soil help a tree grow
- how the tree uses sunlight to help it grow
- Draw your own urban forestry plan for adding trees to a
street, yard, or park near your home. Show what types of trees you
would like to see planted.
Items 2 and 3 were renumbered as items 4 and 6, and had some minor
wording changes.
Item 4 was deleted.
Items 5, 6, and 7 were renumbered as items 7, 8, and 9, and had some
minor wording changes.
Items 1 and 2 were renumbered 2 and 1, and the last sentence of new
item 1 was changed to read:
Give examples of minerals used in these products.
Item 3 had a minor wording change.
New item 7 was added, and reads:
- Describe what a fossil is. How is it used to tell how
old a formation is? Find two examples of fossils in your area.
In item 1, the following was added:
Study them for a while then release them.
In item 2, the following was DELETED:
Put plants and animals that you
have collected in it.
Minor wording changes were made to items 5 and 6.
New item 8 was added as follows:
- Give examples of
- A producer, a consumer, and a decomposer in the food chain of an
ecosystem
- One way humans have changed the balance of nature
- How you can help protect the balance of nature
There are minor wording changes to items 2, 4, 6, and 8, and the
requirement to sleep on a ground bed was removed from item 2. |
